I'm finally formatting my manuscript for print, and wow... the font paralysis is REAL.
I've spent three days just staring at type samples instead of actually laying out pages. The problem? My budget is exactly $0 right now, so I'm strictly in the free zone.
I know Times New Roman is the default, but something about it feels... off? Too familiar? Like it screams "high school essay" instead of "vintage novel."
I've been digging through Google Fonts and found some promising ones. Merriweather keeps popping up—apparently it was designed specifically for on-screen reading but apparently works great in print too . EB Garamond looks absolutely gorgeous with that classic Renaissance vibe, and it's supposedly one of the most elegant free options out there . Then there's Crimson Text, which mimics old-style Garamond and gives that scholarly feel without costing a dime .
Literata caught my eye too—it was literally commissioned for Google Play Books, so it's built for long-form reading .
For those of you who've actually printed paperbacks with free fonts—which ones don't look cheap? Which ones hold up at 300+ pages without making your eyes bleed?
And what about system fonts like Georgia or Palatino—are they secretly better than downloading something fancy?
Drop your favorites below! And please tell me if I'm overthinking this whole font thing...
